SCOTTSDALE RESIDENCE

Rough stone walls, made of local river rock and ample mortar, run from the entry court all the way through the kitchen and out to the pool deck. Generous overhanging roofs accentuate the horizontal expanse of the site and provide ample shade. A variety of spatial experiences are provided through subtle changes in elevation; the main living spaces are slightly lifted off of the desert floor, from which vantages of the distant mountains are captured; while bedrooms are slightly sunken into the earth, providing passive cooling from the ground and an intimate connection to immediate surroundings. The natural palette grounds the house in the Sonoran Desert. Sandy served as project architect for this desert residence while at Marmol Radziner.
