Strategic orientation and massing capture the prevailing sea breezes from the west and shielding from hot desert winds from the east. The traditional Nubian vault informed the design of the roof structures and is also reflected in the plan as well for additional passive cooling. Most of the building was completed with Compressed Earth Block, a low carbon solution that was sourced locally. Brick screens and high vents provide passive ventilation in the harsh desert climate. This project was designed in collaboration with Nicolas Vernoux-Thélot and his team at In Situ Architecture.
